June 25, 2020 - Tony Releases All Star Video Collaboration to Benefit the Actors Fund
Jazz and Entertainment Stars Come Together to Raise Funds
for the Music Community with Ambitious ‘Pick Yourself Up’ Video
June 25, 2020 – Grammy award-winning vocalists and instrumentalists, studio musicians, top YouTube music creators and even a world-class tap dancer have all come together to raise funds for their fellow artists impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The project, unveiled on YouTube June 25, is an ambitious mass video collaboration of a full cross section of jazz and entertainment stars, set to the tune of the 1936 Depression-era song, “Pick Yourself Up,” written by Jerome Kern and Dorothy Fields.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=11cFfj5taxw
The song was arranged by Tedd Firth and Yamaha Artist Tony DeSare. DeSare conceived and produced the project, mixed the audio and edited the video.
The video is being released in conjunction with a major fundraising campaign with the Actors Fund. Anyone wishing to help artists during these difficult times is encouraged to make a donation here:
http://www.actorsfund.org/jazz
The video features DeSare along with featured artists including Brian Stokes Mitchell (Tony Award Winner), Steve Tyrell (Grammy Award-winning singer and producer), John Pizzarelli (Jazz Vocalist and Guitarist), Grace Kelly (Saxophonist), Tierney Sutton (Jazz Singer), Ann Hampton Callaway (Jazz Singer), Catherine Russell (Jazz Singer), Bria Skonberg (Singer and Trumpet Player), Benny Bennack III (Singer and Trumpet Player), Clint Holmes (Vocalist), Jarrett Johnson (Vocalist), Andrew Brady (Principal Bassoonist for Atlanta Symphony), The Piano Guys (Star YouTube Musical Act), Postmodern Jukebox (Star YouTube Music Creator), John Manzari (Tap Dancer), Aaron Weinstein (Jazz Violinist), Brian Czach (Drummer), Billy Thornton (Bassist), Edward Decker (Guitar) and Tedd Firth (Pianist and Co-Arranger).
“When I first found myself at home with all my shows canceled, I felt an overwhelming urge to do something to help while quarantining at home,” said DeSare. “I started reaching out to my very talented and creative friends to ask if they would collaborate with me to raise awareness and money for our colleagues and peers.
“Tedd Firth and I arranged the tune, I got live instruments to record their tracks from home and sent out the track to artists so they could make their contribution. Some sang a few bars, some played their instrument and some content creators took their own 8 bar solo making their own independent contribution to the virtual jam session.
“It’s been a labor of love to put this project together, and am hopeful that it serves as a reminder of the comfort that music can bring and that the music makers are in need of help right now as live music events will most likely be the very last thing to return to normal.”

April 24, 2020 - Tony DeSare and Scott Bradlee, creator of Postmodern Jukebox, release Evolution of Piano Duet
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EDuzJ5SKFjA
Tony took inspiration from viral videos such as “Evolution of Dance,” but quickly realized that there wasn’t a definitive video compilation that traces the history of pop music performed on the grand dame of musical instruments.
“When I go to a piano store, I hear all these songs in my head and just want to sit down and play them,” Tony told me today. “I wanted to create a performance that was both efficient and entertaining, while providing the definitive journey.”
Tony has ultimately created the definitive “evolution of piano” video, informed by the most well-known piano hooks that are essential elements of songs piano music lovers have embraced throughout history—from “The Entertainer,” “Rondo Alla Turca” and “Heart and Soul,” to “Axel F,” “Right Here Waiting,” “Virtual Insanity” and “Clocks.”
All told, 28 of the most memorable hooks played on the piano throughout history, culminating in the classic “Knuckle Song.”
Tony spent several weeks arranging the music, putting each piece in chronological order, ensuring that it all flowed seamlessly in different keys and tempos.
He shared the lineup, sheet music and an audio recording with Scott, then flew to LA where the two talented artists rehearsed and shot the video with a Red 4K camera in just one day at PMJ Manor (Scott’s home and headquarters).
Scott already had a Yamaha G2 piano in his studio, while Bonnie Barrett and Makia Matsumura provided a Yamaha C7 for the shoot.
So what is it that Tony wants people to take away from all of this?
“This is a love note to pop piano,” Tony said. “We made it for people who love piano, who come to my shows and relate to the pieces we all learned as we grew up. Since it’s in chronological order, they can hear the different styles—from classical, to ragtime, to swing ragtime, to the Great American Standard era, to ‘70s pop, to ’80s pop (which turned into synth with the likes of Van Halen’s ‘Jump’), to modern day. I hope everyone enjoys this fast-paced medley of the greatest piano hooks in history.”

TONY DESARE RELEASES ONE FOR MY BABY
NEW YORK, NY – Tony DeSare, acclaimed singer/pianist and composer, has released One for My Baby, available everywhere as of Nov 10, 2017.
One for My Baby is an intimate set of songs featuring Edward Decker on solo seven-string guitar and Tony on vocals. The inspiration for the album came from the great Sinatra concept albums of the 50’s, such as In the Wee Small Hours and Sinatra Sings for Only the Lonely. The result is a song cycle that is a meditation on love gone wrong mixed with equal parts heartbreak and the notion that even through the pain, you can be “glad to be unhappy.”
Highlights on the album feature a uniquely dark take on Angel Eyes, with Tony’s baritone supported by the warmth and beauty of the seven string guitar, allowing an accompaniment that can sometimes sound more harp-like. The low A string allows for a much wider range of frequencies and expression.
When She Loved Me, by Randy Newman and from the animated Pixar film, Toy Story 2, is a rarely covered song that proves that the song can work outside it’s narrative purpose in the film and function as a moving song of love and loss.
Special guest, legendary 91 year old seven string guitarist, Bucky Pizzarelli, joins on Memories of You with his unique single line solo playing around Tony’s vocals while Edward accompanies in a slow stride piano-like style.
The record ends on a slightly different and hopeful note with Billy Joel’s classic from his Stranger album, She’s Always a Woman, featuring a small string section as well.
The album contains two solo guitar pieces, the classic standard A Cottage for Sale and a new Tony DeSare original called I’ll Get You Through the Night.
The album was recorded at Tony’s home studio in upstate New York and he also engineered, mixed and mastered the recording.
Named a Rising Star Male Vocalist in Downbeat magazine, DeSare has won critical and popular acclaim for his concert performances throughout North America and abroad. From jazz clubs to Carnegie Hall to Las Vegas headlining with Don Rickles and major symphony orchestras, DeSare brings his fresh take on old school classics around the globe. DeSare has three top ten Billboard jazz albums under his belt and has been featured on the CBS Early Show, NPR, A Prairie Home Companion, and The Today Show.
Notwithstanding his critically acclaimed turns as a singer/pianist, DeSare is also an accomplished award-winning composer. He won first place in the USA Songwriting Contest, and has written the theme song for the motion picture, My Date with Drew, along with several broadcast commercials.
DeSare’s recent and upcoming appearances include the Ravinia Festival with the Chicago Symphony, The Philly Pops, The Seattle Symphony, Vail Jazz, The Smith Center in Las Vegas and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra.
Edward Decker names early influences as Wes Montgomery, Bucky Pizzarelli, Nat King Cole, and Andre’ Previn. Several years ago, the National Endowment of the arts recognized Decker’s prowess on the seven string guitar and awarded him a grant study with Bucky Pizzarelli. Decker has also recorded a solo 7 string guitar CD entitled “Dear Mr. Pizzarelli”.
Tony DeSare is a Yamaha Artist.
